Salome

I began my Capoeira journey after joining a class in Bombay on a whim. What started as simple curiosity soon grew into a daily practice, as I sought every opportunity to train with different teachers across the city. A few years later, I began assisting with children’s classes and school programs, and discovered that teaching is one of the most meaningful ways I can give back to the art that has given me so much.

I have now been practising Capoeira for over ten years with Capoeira India. What continues to inspire me is how much this art form holds within it. I love that it is a martial art with its own music, history and culture; that it invites you to play rather than spar; and that every game becomes a unique conversation. Through its Afro-Brazilian roots, Capoeira has taught me resilience and shown me how movement can become a way of listening, responding and connecting with others, rather than simply competing.

Growing up, I was very much a homebody and came to movement relatively late in life. Capoeira became the doorway not only to physical practice, but to an entirely different way of experiencing the world and relating to my surroundings. The community around it introduced me to a different way of living. Today, I love exploring other movement practices, but I always return to Capoeira as home.

When I teach, I hope to share the same sense of curiosity, joy and belonging that first drew me in, planting small seeds that allow others to discover their own relationship with Capoeira.

CLASS

This class offers an introduction to Capoeira as a living Afro-Brazilian art form, where martial arts, music, rhythm, play and culture come together in one dynamic practice.

Following the teaching methodology of the Academy of Capoeira India, classes build progressively from strong foundations, making the practice accessible to all levels while encouraging each participant to develop confidence, coordination and freedom of movement. Through the exploration of fundamental movements, partner work, rhythm, games and elements of the Roda, students will experience Capoeira as a playful dialogue that cultivates awareness, adaptability and connection.

Alongside the physical practice, the class introduces the cultural traditions, music and history that give Capoeira its unique identity, inviting participants to engage with the art as a complete practice rather than simply a martial art or dance form.

This workshop is an invitation to move with curiosity, listen deeply, and discover the joy of learning through play.
